If You Have Diabetes are You Aware of Foods Containing Carbohydrates?

If You Have Diabetes Are You Aware of Foods Containing Carbohydrates?
A challenge for people who have diabetes is figuring what they can eat. Underlying diabetes diet guidelines is the importance of following a heart-healthy eating plan. Carbohydrates are in the spotlight in diabetes meal planning.

Carbohydrates you eat are ultimately broken down and converted into glue which raises blood sugar. In type 1 diabetes, there is a complete absence of insulin needed to lower blood sugar, while in type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin and the body’s cells are not responsive enough to it. That does not mean a person should completely avoid carbohydrate-containing food. It is important to pay attention to amount and time.
Below is a list of carbohydrate foods.
  • Grains such as bread, cereal, rice and pasta
  • Starchy foods such as white potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn and peas.
  • Fruit and fruit juices
  • Milk, milk substitutes and yogurt.
  • Sugary beverages such as regular soda, sports drinks and energy drinks.
  • Condiments such as jelly, BBQ sauce and ketchup.
  • Sweeteners such as sugar, honey, maple syrup and corn syrup.
  • Sweets, such as ice cream, cake and candy.
