Vending Machine Choices

Vending Machine Choices

So you have been on the run all day and have not had time to eat. The only available food choices are found in a vending machine.  So what will you choose?

Vending machines can be large square boxes of temptation especially when you are hungry.  They often have many food choices. Some less healthy options are full of fat, sugar, sodium and extra calories.  Before making a selection, spend some time looking at what options are available.  Evaluate before inserting your money to insure you are making a healthy choice.

Try to select vending machine foods that are nutrient dense, low in saturated fat, and minimal amounts of sugar. Here are some healthy suggestions.

  • Bottled water
  • Baked tortilla chips
  • Popcorn
  • Sandwiches prepared with whole grain breads, vegetables, lean meats with little or no butter.
  • Low fat muffins
  • Whole grain granola type bars.
  • Snack mixes of cereal, dried fruit and nuts.
  • Salads with low fat dressing on the side
  • Baked crackers
  • Whole grain crackers
